A short History

Classically trained in piano and self taught on guitar I have been playing music since I was 9 and have been writing songs for over 10 years.  When I left school I played around a series of open mike nights before forming a band, called The Harber Process, in 2002 which has since recorded 2 EP’s and played at venues all over Melbourne including Revolver, The Espy, Vibe, The Empress, The Rob Roy, The Builders Arms, onesixone and the Dan O’Connell.

In 2002 I recorded an album in a home studio, some of which was accepted by the Noise Music Festival and released on-line.  Though the CD uses lavish instrumentation and vocal layering the solo performances are more stripped back acoustic and piano pieces.  Sharing the sound of artists like Beck, Iron and Wine, Gomez, and Wilco, I play mostly original songs with the occasional cover.

A longer History

Writing your bio's like defining your style - it's a pain in the ass.  I started learning piano when I was young from a series of embittered sterile machines who lost their passion for music when they failed as performers.  So needless to say, I hated it. It took a genius whose love for teaching and music were equal to berate me like a drill Sergent and finally teach me how to play and more importantly to want to.

Soon after, I snuck away with my brothers guitar while he was finding the world and taught myself to play, and finally, though a winding succession of awful sounds, how to sing as well.

In December January 2002 after finishing my degree I started working alone a the studio out the back on the album that came to be As You Were Asleep, experimenting with unusual song structures, sounds and beats.   You can read more about that here, and download some tracks here.

That same month I started a band called the haber process with my long time friend and guitarist Tim Devine.  The band was filled out by Kate Carison on cello, Nick Price on Bass and Paul Daniel on drums.  With thanks to Ryan Egan and RRR we recorded an EP, A Room, at Bakehouse Studio in Fitzroy, Adam Donovan kindly donating many painful hours to mixing and mastering for a pittance pay.

We took up residency at Ruckers (now Wesley Anne) in Northcote for 6 months while picking up gigs wherever we could: Builders Arms, Dan O'Connell, Vibe, the Royal Derby, the Laundry and Good Morning Captain.

In February 2003 embarked on another residency at the Pinnacle in North Fitzroy.  Paid well in food and beer we experimented with different combinations of band members playing together: Kate and I doing simple acoustic guitar and cello songs, Fez and Div jamming out 30 minute experimental improvised duos on electric guitar (not the Steve Vai kind), we were even joined on stage by members of the crowd on occasion, and Fez, Nico and I each started doing some solo tunes.

Denigrating finally after almost 10 months into some pretty shonky improvisations we decided to pull out and start writing again.  Kate moved onwards and upwards to finish her med degree and Nico started his epic 2 year journey round the globe.  It was at this time we incorporated the Mason brothers, Fez and Sime, into the band and changed the direction of the music.

With the new line-up (as pictured on the right, sans Sime) we went on to play some great venues like Revolver, onesixone, the Empress, the Espy and the Rob Roy.   In mid-2004 started work on a new EP which is now finished but yet to be named and released.

In 2005 I finally got around to finishing off the cover design for As You Were Asleep and pulling it out from the back shelf  to book some gigs around Melbourne.   Playing solo acoustic and piano the songs are a collection of those I've written the years and new material.  I've also started work on soundtracks for two Australian short films: It's A Good Thing and Sandra.
